Baked Tofu

I sometimes overlook the simplest meals when I come to share my recipes here. I often want to present something so enticing, that you will think oh-my-god-I-must-make-this-now. And that’s all well and good, but often not reality. I know I am personally struck with at least a few nights each week where I am so thoroughly exhausted and need to make something healthy yet mindless. So, if this baked tofu helps at least one of you today, I consider my work here a success.

Feel free to add this to rice, salads, soups or just munch on it as a snack. It stays reasonably crunchy in the fridge for a few days also. Last night I added it to this delicious Asian Coconut Noodle Soup from Dana. So good!

Baked Tofu
serves 2-4

14 oz firm tofu, cut into 1/2" cubes (no need to press out water)
2 T soy sauce
1 t sesame oil

Preheat oven to 500F. Arrange tofu cubes on a baking sheet, in a single layer. In a small bowl, combine soy sauce and sesame oil. With a pastry brush, generously coat tofu with sauce. Bake 30 minutes, flipping tofu every 10 minutes, with a spatula, to ensure an even crunch. Remove from oven and allow to cool.

thanks for sharing! I've baked tofu before but never got it as crunchy...probably because I've been using a much lower temp!

I have had a container of tofu sitting in my fridge for a week but had not found any reason to use it until now. Thank you for inspiring my next meal!

Brilliant to bake the tofu before putting it in the soup! I'm sure the texture and flavor were about a million times better than having it just raw. This is the kind of thing that I should make a batch of each week and just add it to things as necessary. Also, my boys love tofu this way, so added protein for them is a huge bonus. Off to buy some tofu!

Looks delicious! I've found that often the posts I hesitate the most about are the ones that get the most comments!

Nice simple recipe! I love tofu however it's cooked. I can even eat it plain with just some soy sauce over it. Love how smooth it feels.

I do appreciate you sharing this, even though it's so simple. For all the complicated things I can cook up, there are simple ones I fail at, and one has been working with tofu! I would love to achieve a perfectly crisp baked tofu, so I'll be trying your advice for the higher temperature next time.

Thanks for sharing this! It's great to have simple things like this to make. One of my favourite weeknight meals is baked tofu, rice and veggies.

Oh yes, you have certainly helped me! I'm a vegetarian, but I haven't found a single way to cook tofu to my liking. I think this might be it. Thank you, thank you!
